Liquidy Scare in Equity Markets

I always find it interesting when there is an event that sends the equity markets for a correction. The Chinese market collapse yesterday showed the rest of the world that even in something ’stable’ like the financial markets, events happen that can move it fast. Yesterday, the Dow Industrial and the TSX were down 500 points at one point! To me, that is a move I almost see every single day in the commodity markets.

People always tell me that the stock market moves quickly and then can’t understand why I completely disagree. In my world, slow growth or declines aren’t in my vocabulary. Volatility is brought up every single day. Nothing is taken for granted. Dad has a friend that told him this about commodity markets a few years back:

“I have experienced every single emotion in the commodity markets except boredom”

Even the big wigs are getting that volatility is something that comes with mass investment:

Stock market declines on Tuesday will have lasting effect !“ HSBC

The investing world learned an important lesson on Tuesday: Financial liquidity has a somewhat unpredictable sibling known as market liquidity, Stewart Hall, market strategist at HSBC Securities Canada wrote in a commentary. On Wednesday, Chinese equity markets recovered some of the huge losses they saw the previous day and the rest of the world also continues to play catch-up. Markets have the much sought after volatility they were looking for, what do they now do with it?! Mr. Hall asked. He thinks the widespread declines seen on Tuesday will provide the dose of fear some investors needed. And while Mr. Hall thinks much of the declines appear slightly over done, he feels these events will indeed have a long-term impact.

I guess the equity markets are coming around to the hedge funds and massive investment volatility. Not all is lost. Yesterday’s move and the income trust annoucement might make me a believer of equity markets having action! Until I am convinced, I will do with the crazy life I know…..commodities!

New Camera: Nikon D40

I decided to upgrade my camera today and go from the bottom of the line model in my simple Sony DSC-P52 from Sony and move into something that can take much better shots and more importantly, shoot faster shots. That is why I moved over to a Nikon D40. It just came out and I managed to get a great deal on it from the Nikon rep as they were the store that I bought it from today! The Flickr information is available here on my camera.

It can take some amazing photos because of the fast shutter speed. For instance, check out this great photo from Wilmack at flickr of a water drop! It is amazing! I am so happy! Now I just have to find a couple great things to take photos of!

iTunes Canada - Where Are Movies?

Being in Canada we always seem to get technology after it has been exploited in every single other country. I guess when California has more people than all of Canada, this would be expected! It bugged me today to head over to the iTunes USA store and see you can download movies and TV shows. It would be great if they would bring that over to us because I am lazy and would rather buy a movie on the PC, broadcast it to the TV with the iTV module and be done with it!

We won’t get the iPhone for about 2 or 3 years either. Oh Canada…..

This is my version of “Angel’s Son” by Sevendust and it is really rough and poor. I am not going to lie. It was a test run using my Macbook audio input. It is only 1 channel and just a start. That is why it is a protected entry for now….

Old Sitemeter Back

Thanks to Collin again, (from previous post), I have managed to find my old sitemeter information in the archives of my old sites! I quit using that sitemeter in early 2004 and it has had no traffic since then. As I just started with a new sitemeter, I decided to turf that one and put this old one back! If nothing else it is heritage. The new sitemeter wasn’t counting any old stats. This one at least has something! Sounds like a good deal to put it back on.
